The SUP Safety and Rescue course provides a full understanding and practical application of safety considerations and rescue techniques that accompany any coach.
The course includes, towing, incident management, drowning, board rescues and in water rescues. In addition knowledge will be gained in effective communication, equipment and recognition of other services such as lifeguards.

Pre-Requisites: WSA SUP Safety and Rescue, Member of WSA. 8hr 1st Aid qualification
Ability: Good paddling skills in light winds upwind, across wind and downwind; use two types of turns effectively
Remit: Sheltered Water (small lakes, sheltered bays, no flow rivers, canals)
Assessment Criteria: Coaching session, personal ability and written exam
The Foundation Coach course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to safely introduce Stand Up Paddle Boarding to beginners wishing to try and develop their SUP skills in a sheltered water environment.
You will learn essential safety information; gain knowledge of equipment, group management and the coaching skills to effectively get students paddling. Additional knowledge will include fault finding and correction with a good understanding of technique.
You will leave the course being able to plan sessions and confidently deliver them working within the structure of a school or centre.
Those students who do not meet the required standard will if appropriate be offered assistant coach status allowing persons to develop under other qualified coaches as well as assisting in centres and schools. Once skills have been consolidated candidates can present for reassessment

Age: Minimum age 16 (16-17 year olds gain assistant instructor qualification)
Pre-Requisites: WSA or recognised equivalent lifeguarding qualification. WSA Foundation Surf Instructor Holder. Member of WSA.
Ability: Surf green waves forehand and backhand in a number of conditions. Perform critical manoeuvres competently such as bottom turn, top turn, cutbacks and floaters in surf minimum of 1.5 metres with flow.
Remit: Beach/Surf environment.
Assessment Criteria: Pre-course workbook, coaching session, personal surfing assessment and written exam and 20 hours instructing work experience.
The Advanced Surf Instructor course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to safely introduce surfing to improvers and competent surfers wishing to try and develop their surfing skills in surf up to 1.5 metres.
You will learn essential safety information; gain knowledge of equipment, group management and the coaching skills to effectively get students catching green waves out the back and trimming waves. Additional knowledge will include fault finding and correction with a good understanding of technique as well as manoeuvre coaching.
You will leave the course being able to plan sessions and confidently deliver them working within the structure of a school or centre.
Those students who do not meet the desired standard will if appropriate be offered assistant coach status allowing persons to develop under other qualified coaches as well as assisting in centres and schools
Water Skills Academy Level 1 is the minimum requirement and industry standard to work as a surf instructor in a surf school, surf camp, club or college.
This internationally recognised qualification allows you to coach beginner and intermediate level surfers. The programme develops individual skills and knowledge base, covering a range of modules. A range of different approaches are involved in coaching and instructing all our trainee coaches. It must be combined with a valid lifeguard course in order to work as a surf instructor, such as the full ‘SLSGB Surf Lifeguard’ award which allows you work as an instructor as well as a lifeguard, or the shorter ‘Surf Coach Safety & Rescue Competency Award’ if you only wish to work as a surf instructor
The membership to WSA will be valid for a year, after this you will need to pay your annual membership directly to WSA.

Gaining our foundation surf instructor qualification will enable you to instruct beginners through to intermediate level. We will equip you with the coaching skills to confidently enter the work place as you will be learning from industry experts in this field. Minimum age to attend the course is 16. We require all of our candidates to be able to CONFIDENTLY demonstrate that they can perform the manoeuvres listed below in surf which is head high.
All manoeuvres must be performed forehand and backhand. If you are not sure whether you are at the required skill level to attend our course then send us some video footage of you surfing and we will advise you further.
